Privacy, Hyperbole and Why Facebook Is Only Partially At Fault

After years of complaints and controversy, last week the FTC finally "lowered the boom" on Facebook for its questionable handling of customer data. All at the same time, the ruling is being heralded as a marketing game changer, a meaningless bump in the road, and an injustice against innovation. But in reality, Facebook its merely a co-conspirator in what had become a widespread ambivalence toward protecting personally identifiable information (PII). Its partners in crime? The government and you!
